In line with Kenya’s legal framework, UPM conducts its party elections and nominations adhering to the following key rules and regulations:
Nomination Rules and Procedures: UPM is required to develop comprehensive nomination rules that outline the procedures for party primaries and the nomination of party lists. These rules must be accessible to all party members, including those with disabilities, and should be posted on the party’s official website.
Election Board Appointment: The party must appoint a national Election Board, and may establish county Election Boards, to oversee the nomination processes. Members of these boards should be eligible voters, compliant with Chapter Six of the Constitution, and not have been convicted of election offenses.
Submission of Nomination Rules: UPM is mandated to submit its nomination rules to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) at least six months before nominating candidates for elections. This ensures compliance with the Political Parties Act, 2011, and the Elections Act.
Party Nomination Code of Conduct: The party must prepare and communicate a nomination code of conduct to its members at least thirty days before conducting party primaries or nominating party lists. Aspiring candidates are required to sign and adhere to this code.
By following these regulations, UPM ensures that its internal electoral processes are transparent, democratic, and in line with Kenya’s legal standards, reinforcing its commitment to accountable leadership and the empowerment of its members.
United Patriotic Movement aspires to inculcate a political system that is answerable to the electorates in Kenya at all levels of its leadership hierarchy, a pro change system responsive to the people’s needs and aspirations at all times.
